Inadequate Connections: Technology Alone Isn’t Enough

To recap, a failure to connect nodes in an innovation network can happen at three different levels: First, inadequate IT systems for sharing codified knowledge; second, failure to leverage technology to connect those who hold knowledge with potential recipients to transfer experiential knowledge; and last, the inability to build personal bonds and networks across various locations to transfer and integrate knowledge. While the three problems differ in nature, their solutions all begin with the premise that pivotal to their success is the need for a clear and obvious benefit to the staff using the systems or working with colleagues at distant sites. Staff should feel that the value gained from using the mechanisms and processes, is greater than the burden of work imposed by having them. In other words, people tend to be more amenable to supporting any system or process if they can recognize the value it adds to their own work experience.
